What does it mean to be an Afropreneur?

An AFROPRENEUR is a person -who identifies with the Global Black Diaspora- that organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.

We all know that it's not easy to start a business, yet alone work hard to maintain and sustain a business. For many people, delving into entrepreneurship is an act of survival. For others, it's an effort to build wealth and ensure residual or additional income.

In the US, women are entering the workplace as entrepreneurs in significant numbers! According to a survery conducted by Guidant financial38% of African American businesses are female-owned, up considerably from the prior year.

Additonally, business owners entering the current marketplace are younger than they were generations ago.

Meanwhile, while informality exists on all continents, a whopping number of more than 89% of jobs are informal Sub-Saharan Africa (ILO, 2018).

For the Afropreneur, formalization is imperative once the company’s growth takes hold for many reasons including substantial direct and indirect benefits for employees and protection of intellectual property.

Lack of access—to both startup capital and professional networks—is the major driver of lower rates of entrepreneurship among blacks anywhere in the world including on the African Continent.

Let's change this narrative by increasing access in whichever way possible!

That's what this platform is about!
